The population of France is about 62 million, accounting for 1% of the world’s population; the area is 541,400 km2, 0.11% of the world’s total area. With a developed economy and a gross domestic product ranking the highest in the world, the GDP in 2005 was 1171 trillion euros. France’s one-off energy consumption has been growing rapidly since the 1970s, from 11.8 billion toe in 1973 (equivalent to 107 kcal net calorific value) to 217.6 billion toe in 2005, an average annual increase of 114%. Since French nuclear power accounts for an important proportion of primary energy consumption, exceeding 78%, its CO2 emissions per unit of GDP are low, ranking the fourth in the EU.
