Enders和Peeble首次使用麻疹病毒诱导培养细胞的融合。随后Okada证实仙台病毒是一种高效的病毒类融合因子。为人工诱发体细胞杂交技术奠定了基础。此后又相继发现一些DNA病毒也有介导细胞融合的能力,其中研究得较为广泛和深入的单纯是疱疹病毒。最近Bayliss和Wolf的实验显示EB病毒能够介导Raji细胞之间,以及Raji细胞与不存在EB病毒受体的T淋巴细胞等的融合。
