Against the background of the independence of the United States and the appeals of great powers in the first half of the 19th century, Cooper created many oceanic novels full of strong maritime nationalism and patriotism. Cooper actively respected and carried forward the marine literary works represented by the trilogy of the Ocean Novel, “The Navigator,” “The Red Pirates,” and “The Water Monster,” as well as the “Thoughts on Americans” and “The History of the U.S. Navy.” The United States’ maritime traditions and attributes have focused on portraying and shaping the heroic image of the sea and emphasizing the link between the ocean and the destiny of the United States. The intertwining of maritime nationalism, heroism and patriotism in these works has become a distinctive feature. Cooper’s marine nationalism thought, as a special form of American nationalism, was formed in the context of American national independence in the first half of the 19th century. It is of great significance to promoting the national identity of the United States and enhancing the national cohesion and pride of the United States However, it is undeniable that Cooper’s thinking on maritime nationalism has now evolved into a potential threat to the world’s harmonious order by U.S. global hegemony and world expansionism.
