In modern Chinese, “half” is a special number. There are usually the following five usages. First, in front of a noun, there must be a quantifier accompanied. Such as: “half cup of tea” can not say “half tea.” “Half a catty” cannot say “half meat.” Second, used in front of nouns, to keep up with quantifiers, sometimes correct half, and sometimes only part. Such as: “This book is for sale at half price.” “Our family must eat half a catty of oil every day.” In the example sentence, “half” means only half the meaning. In the following sentence, it is not exactly half but only a certain part. Such as: “This half of the apple is red.” “The fire glows red for half a day.”
