For the successful application of military simulation training, realistic force confrontation is crucial. Unfortunately, a number of factors make manual control of simulated force confrontations difficult to achieve or even impossible. This article explores these factors and discusses how automated interactive targets (AITs) can help train exercise controllers (TECs) to provide effective, real-world resistance to force in situations of strong interactivity. The features of the prototype Remote AIT Processing System (RAPS) illustrate how to design an AIT system based on the TEC’s requirements for automation entities. RAPS provides remote control of AIT for existing or new systems and its excellent features enable TEC to freely select and control AIT for individual training exercises and crew-friendly exercises.
