According to the Financial Times, Mahathir, Malaysia’s general manager, announced an ambitious plan to build a “Multimedia Super Corridor.” He claims that this plan will “create a precedent for the world.” The “Multimedia Super Corridor” is planned to be built in a 750-square-kilometer area linked to the capital city of Kuala Lumpur. The government will invest 2 billion U.S. dollars to build an information technology city in the area, and the new computer communications network will serve 100,000 users. It is estimated that this super corridor will be completed by the end of 1997. The purpose of Malaysia’s creation of the “Multimedia Super Corridor” is to attract a large amount of investment from major IT companies in the world in order to improve Malaysia’s IT skills and accelerate its economic prosperity. There are several incentives to be implemented in the construction of the “Super Corridor” and allow immigrants to apply for work there, recruit employees and have no restrictions on the ownership of foreign assets, and exempt the operating companies in the area for 10 years from taxation.
