“Ceremonial Trail: The Northern God on the Southern Land” is a musical ethnography of the West African Ewe. In the view of author Friedrich Friedrichsson, music is crucial in the Evey ceremony because the Evey people experience the deities and others primarily in a musical “being-in-the-world” way of. Friedman reveals the uniqueness of Ewe’s music by analyzing the cross-tempo of the Evans drumming. In the Evey people’s consciousness, the demarcation line between the human and the spiritual world is vague, or almost nonexistent. Through an immersive experience, Friedman can make insightful observations of the Evian world and develop montage-like scene transitions and poetic depictions of the book.
