卞之琳对诗歌语言有着永不满足、近乎苛刻的追求,执着于创造一种典雅圆融、凝练精致的现代白话诗语。在语言本体层面上,他在坚持使用现代白话口语的前提下,熔铸古典雅言诗语,从词汇、语法和语义层面改造新诗语言,努力创造一种适合现代新诗诗意表达和诗体要求、与散文白话相区别的新诗白话。卞之琳追求凝练的古典诗语意识,发挥古典诗歌“字思维”的优势,提高诗歌语言中名词和动词的比重,注重文言虚词的运用和表达效果,从而提升了白话诗语构筑意象的能力,拓展了新诗的表意空间。此外,还对诗歌用典作了现代传承和改造,在现代新诗与古典诗歌之间架起了一道精神桥梁,探索了现代白话诗语的多种可能性。
