Melvin Edwards’s “Torture” series, which connects personal experiences with the fate of Afro-Americans, uses the series of sculptural forms and symbolic constructions to demonstrate the historical experience and reality of black people situation. Since 1963, Edwards has created more than 150 pieces of metal-welded relief and garden sculptures. Various hooks, spikes, water pipes, locks, hammers, scissors and chains have all become the basic elements of sculptures Elements, which are creatively reintegrated, combine concrete examples with subjective judgments in a deliberate way, clearly arousing people’s memories of the history of humiliation by black handicraftsmen and slaves.
