Genetic sex-
Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann) Italian scientists have discovered a symbiotic relationship between bacteria and the fruit fly. The bacterium can be passed down from generation to generation with the fruit fly and is necessary for the growth of the Mediterranean fruit fly larvae. Thus they hypothesize that the production of the population (for genetic control) of Mediterranean fruit flies may be constrained by this microorganism. Dutch scientists are exploring the use of genetic engineering techniques to produce single male offspring, which will give sterile insect technology pest control system more robust vitality. They refer to this genetic project as Genetic sex-
