Immunotherapy is the most promising treatment to improve the control of cancer diseases. Early clinical trials are verifying the safety and feasibility of immunotherapy in the treatment of gastrointestinal cancer. To date, however, immunotherapy has been an experimental option for these diseases and a better understanding of the molecular, cellular, structural and clinical differences is crucial for the development of personalized immunotherapy. A literature review of the authors summarizes the key mechanisms that regulate the tumor’s immune system and the different immunotherapy goals for improving disease control in patients with advanced cancer.
