技术在不断地进步,并且不是以线性方式而是以阶段式发展的.一个基本工程原理的发现或一种新型材料的发展常常导致一连串的技术革新反应。蒸气机的发明引起了一场工业革命,电子学随着真空管的开发达到了其第一个平稳时期,继晶体管、集成电路及大规模集成块的发展之后又获得了爆炸性的进步。在民用工程方面也一样,硅酸盐水泥及后来的钢筋混凝土的使用确实使这项工程从一个土、石、木的世界跳跃到另一个高级结构的世界。
Technology is constantly improving, and not developed linearly but in stages. The discovery of a basic engineering principle or the development of a new type of material often leads to a series of technological innovations. The invention of the steam engine caused an industrial revolution, and electronics had reached its first stable period with the development of vacuum tubes. After the development of transistors, integrated circuits, and large-scale integrated blocks, electronics gained explosive progress. In civil engineering, the use of Portland cement and later reinforced concrete did make this project jump from a world of earth, stone and wood to another high-level structure world.
