The effect of high temperature heat treatment on the catalytic activity of activated carbon fiber (ACF) to convert SO2 to H2SO4 in the presence of O2 and water vapor was investigated. The relationship between the type and amount of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of ACF and the desulfurization activity of ACF after heat treatment The results show that the total amount of oxygen-containing functional groups released as CO at the optimum heat treatment temperature determines the desulfurization activity of the ACF, whereas the oxygen-containing functional groups released as CO2 do not contribute to enhancing the desulfurization activity of the ACF. By using different oxidants to change the type and amount of oxygen-containing functional groups on the surface of ACF, it is further confirmed that the amount of CO released during the heat treatment is directly proportional to the desulfurization activity of ACF
