Southern Publishing and Media Co. Ltd (SPM), the winner of the “Backbone Enterprises for China's National Cultural Export” award for eight consecutive years. The award is co-presented by China’s Ministry of Commerce and the State General Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television of the People’s Republic of China.
I. Endorsement of intent on a strategic cooperation with Springer Science and Business Media
During the 20th Beijing International Book Fair (BIBF), SPM and Springer Science and Business Media (Springer) held a signing ceremony for the letter of intent for strategic cooperation at the Guangdong Pavilion. The two sides agreed to cooperate actively in carrying out copyright trade, project implementation and cultural exchange, sharing resources in respect of topics, authors and marketing channels, planning, developing, editing and publishing books respectively oriented to Chinese and international markets, building a business platform for digital publication and information services. In addition, with the development of business, the two sides will jointly explore the cooperation on funds and establish a joint venture company to develop the domestic and overseas markets. SPM hopes that the two sides would work together to develop more products tailored to overseas markets and improve the implementation of the international strategies so that SPM’s books and cultural products could gain certain share of the international markets; meanwhile, the two sides should promote Springer’s business development in South China by means of SPM’s channel advantages and marketing force. CEO Derk Haank of Springer said that the cooperation with SPM contributed to the filling of Springer’s blank market in South China and the dissemination of Chinese culture all over the world.
II. Cooperation reached between SPM and the Hungarian Duna International Publishing Group
In September 2013, a delegation headed by Wang Guike, President of GDPG and SPM visited Hungary’s Duna International Publishing Group (DIPG), during which, János Halász, Minister of State for Culture met the delegation accompanied by President of DIPG Mr. Miklós Baráz. The two sides exchanged views on the traditional friendship and culture of Hungary and China as well as the publishing cooperation between DIPG and SPM.
Minister János Halász said that the culture resources of Hungary and China were highly complementary, providing a broad prospect for cultural exchange and cooperation between the two sides. Hungarian Ministry of Culture would give financial supports to the publication of Hungarian books in China. Starting from the cooperation on books, SPM and DIPG will expand their cooperation to the neighboring countries of Hungary and even the whole Europe when there’re good opportunities. GDPG and SPM will make more contributions to the Sino-Hungary cultural exchanges and cooperation.
During the visit, SPM and DIPG reached several cooperation intentions in publication. For example, the SPM will translate and publish a series of books about Hungarian culture, and the first batch of books will mainly cover Hungarian history, poetry, tourism culture, wine, cultural and artistic albums, etc. DIPG will publish 20 to 30 kinds of China-themed books provided by the SPM, mainly including books concerning traditional Chinese culture, Chinese food culture, traditional Chinese medicines, health-preserving culture, successful experience of China’s reform, opening up and modernization construction, China’s opportunities and Chinese education for foreigners. Some books may be simultaneously translated into Romanian and published by DIPG.
III. Endorsement of intent on a strategic cooperation with Italian Class Editori S.P.A.
In 2013, the SPM was invited to visit Italian Class Editori. As the second largest media group in Italy, Class Editori takes the lead in business and financial news, fashion, luxury and lifestyle information. Involving a wide range of media sector, the group’s portfolio encompasses daily newspapers, including ItaliaOggi, MF/Milano Finanza and MF Fashion, magazines including Capital, Class, Gentleman, Ladies and Global Finance, as well as radio, broadcasting, news agency, publishing, professional product services, etc.
During CEO of Class Editori Mr. Paolo Panerai’s visit to the SPM last year, the two sides reached cooperation intentions on several projects. SPM’s return visit promoted and enriched the cooperative projects, including strengthening the cooperation on TV channels, discussing the cooperation on magazines, finding the best connection points to realize the mutual resource sharing and carrying out multi-level cooperation on wine culture.
IV. The visit to France’s Nathan Press
In 2013, the SPM was invited to the France’s Nathan, a century-old company founded in 1881, for business discussion. Nathan is the first publishing house that advocates “Happy Learning” education idea in the world, leading the trends of early childhood education in the 20th century. So far, they were still in the van of children’s books, education games, supplementary reading material of teaching, multimedia resource pools and other fields. With its products tailored to readers aged 2 to 25, Nathan is a model of the great education publishing industry. Through discussion, the two sides thought they should continue promoting the cooperation, expanding the cooperation filed, improving the cooperation level and looking for a path of sustainable development for the great education publication by learning from the advanced education publication ideas and operation thoughts. V. The cooperation with Europe Regional Bureau of Xinhua News Agency
In September 2013, President Wang Guike of GDPG and SPM held a meeting with Wang Chaowen, President of Europe Regional Bureau of Xinhua News Agency and Ying Qiang, President of Paris Branch of Xinhua News Agency in France to carry out a discussion about establishing a strategic partnership on the cultural development and making greater contributions to Chinese culture’s “Going Global”. More specifically, the two sides will cooperate in planning a series of books for Chinese readers and enterprises concerning guides for Euro-thorough tour, trade and investment, such as Guide for Cultural Tourism in Europe, Guide to French Wine, Guide to French Grade A Chateaus and other high-quality books with cultural connotation, co-undertaking “Reform and Opening-up Achievement Exhibition Tour of Guangdong” in Europe after the GDPG files an application to the CPC Guangdong Provincial Committee and Guangdong Provincial People’s Government. It aims to publicize Guangdong’s great changes in economy, culture and society having taken place in the 35 years of reform and opening-up, tell China’s stories to the world, display China’s image, convey China’s confidence, etc.
