先睹为快的心情,使我借到田自秉先生的《工艺美术概论》(以下简称《概论》)的手稿时,就以笔记的形式记载下当时的所得所想。见到成书后重温其义,细细品味,朴素的语言中不乏精到之论,为工艺美术初创了一个理论的体系,是一本高品位的理论专著。对于任何一门学科,基本理论研究的贫乏都是一种悲哀。工艺美术伴随着文明史发展到今天,人类迈出的每一个步伐都印记着工艺美术的发展,然而对于这种“形而下”的物质文化的理论研究却以难以理解的理由出现贫乏的状态。国外关于工艺美术的专门论述也不多见,中国古人为我们留下的工艺美术理论遗产相比起来还是丰富的。但是现代的工艺美术理论如果仅仅停留在对古人的片言只语加以整理注释是不够的,《概论》通过建立工艺美术的理论体系的努力,在整理传统工艺理论的基础上,广泛吸取现代学术成果,站在历史和理论
