山西新军作为抗日战争时期中国共产党与山西地方实力派阎锡山在统一战线的形式下合作创建的人民抗日武装力量,实际上是中国共产党领导的抗日群众组织和抗日武装,是适合当时山西抗日形势的一种特殊形式的统一战线组织。在抗日战争中,山西新军的建立和壮大,促进了山西乃至华北抗日民族统一战线的建立、巩固和发展;促进了地方抗日团体和抗日武装的建立和发展,配合八路军进行了英勇的抗日游击战争;巩固和扩大了抗日根据地,支持和推动着山西以至华北的抗战局面。
