Study on hydrocarbon formation by reaction of graphite, serpentine and olivine and reaction of graphite and biotite was carried out under high pressure and high temperature using a diamond anvil cell apparatus. Gas chromatographic analysis results indicate that both reactions generate methane-dominated hydrocarbon, which means these reactions are likely significant ways of abiogenetic hydrocarbon formation in the deep earth.
