Realism is a long-standing tradition of Taiwanese films. The Taiwan’s new film movement prevalent in the 1980s has even brought it to the extreme. The movie is unavoidable in the increasingly commercialized market economy. However, it is gratifying that many creators are not influenced by commercial interests and uphold the realistic style of seeking truth from facts. 2009 Golden Horse Award for Best Film “can not do without you” is one example. The film seeks to restore the status quo in the community. By demonstrating the unfavorable affection encountered by a couple of father and daughter in handling the account in Taiwan society, the film examines issues of social system and morality in an image way, which is of great realistic significance.
