《三个和尚没水吃》的寓言故事广为流传。而雨花石上的三个和尚妙趣横生、表情各异的神情,又使人重温起这则寓言。静观雨花石上的三个和尚(见图),圆圆的脑袋、胖胖的身子、大大的眼睛,惟妙惟肖。那老和尚瞪着双眼,好象在训斥两个和尚:“你们怎么还不去抬水,难道还要我去吗?”那大和尚爱理不理地歪着头像在说:“水应该是小和尚去挑,他的‘学徒’期还未满呢。”小和尚两只眼睛咕碌碌地转,灵机一动跑到老和尚身边争辩说:“我还小呢,您不是常说大的要照顾小的吗?水应该他去挑。”老和尚气得满脸铁青,大和尚急得脸色通红,小和尚争得脸色发白,但却还在相互争执、相互推诿,水始终未担来。三组雨花石的质、色、形、纹、象形、意蕴都巧妙地融合、搭配,给人在欢愉中以启发,堪称一绝。
