阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项,并在答题卡上将该项涂黑。

I recently heard a story from Stephen Glenn about a famous research scientist who had made several very important medical breakthroughs. He was being interviewed by a newspaper reporter who asked him why he thought he was able to be so much more creative than the average person. What set him so far apart from others?
He responded that, in his opinion, it all came from an experience with his mother that occurred when he was about two years old. He had been trying to remove a bottle of milk from the refrigerator when he lost his grip on the slippery bottle and it fell, spilling its contents all over the kitchen floor — a real sea of milk!
When his mother came into the kitchen, instead of yelling at him, giving him a lecture or punishing him, she said, “Robert, what a great and wonderful mess you have made! I have rarely seen such a huge puddle of milk. Well, the damage has already been done. Would you like to get down and play in the milk for a few minutes before we clean it up?”
Indeed, he did. After a few minutes, his mother said, “You know, Robert, whenever you make a mess like this, eventually you have to clean it up and restore everything to its proper order. So, how would you like to do that? We could use a sponge, a towel or a mop. Which do you prefer?” He chose the sponge and together they cleaned up the spilled milk.
His mother then said, “You know, what we have here is a failed experiment in how to effectively carry a big milk bottle with two tiny hands. Let’s go out in the back yard and fill the bottle with water and see if you can discover a way to carry it without dropping it.” The little boy learned that if he grasped the bottle at the top near the lip with both hands, he could carry it without dropping it. What a wonderful lesson!
This famous renowned scientist then remarked that it was at that moment that he knew he didn’t need to be afraid to make mistakes. Instead, he learned that mistakes were just opportunities for learning something new, which is, after all, what scientific experiments are all about. Even if the experiment “doesn’t work”, we usually learn something valuable from it.
56. The passage is intended to____.
A. introduce the life story of a famous scientist
B. compare the different ways of family education
C. reveal the secret of the scientist’s success
D. inspire the parents to improve theirteaching methods
57. From the passage, we can know that Robert____.
A. was very naughty when he was two
B. was so working ̄hard as to succeed
C. owes a lot to his education from his mother

58. On seeing the spoiled milk, what did the mother do firstly?
A. She comforted his son.
B. She cleaned the floor.
C. She taught how to grasp the bottle.
D. She gave the boy a lecture.
59. Which of the following is the best according to the text?
A. It would be great if all the scientists can know the importance of the failed experiment.
B. It would be great if the experiment doesn’t work at all.
C. It would be great if all parents would respond the way Robert’s mother responded to him.
D. It would be great if we are more creative than the average person.

More than 2 million US teenagers have suffered a serious bout (发作) of depression in the past year, according to a federal government survey released on Tuesday.
On average, 8.5 percent of adolescents aged 12 to 17 described having had a major depressive episode in the previous year, the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration reported.
But there were“striking differences” by sex, with 12.7 percent of girls and 4.6 percent of boys affected.
Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third ̄leading cause of death for 15 ̄to 24 ̄year ̄olds in the United States.
“Combined 2004 to 2006 data show that rates of past year major depressive experience among youths aged 12 to 17 generally increased with increasing age,” the researchers wrote.
Researchers at SAMHSA and RTI International in Research Triangle Park, North Carolina, prepared the report using data from the National Survey on Drug Use and Health.
More than 67,700 youths aged 12 to 17 answered questions about mood and depression. They were also asked to rate how depression affected them using the Sheehan Disability Scale, which measures impact on family, friends, chores at home, work and school.
Researchers defined a major depressive episode as two weeks or longer of depressed mood or loss of interest or pleasure, and at least four other symptoms (症状) such as problems with sleep, energy, concentration or self ̄image.
Nearly half of the teenagers who had major depression said it severely damaged their ability to function in at least one of the areas on the disability scale.

By 2010, spending on Internet advertising will account for 10% of total US ad dollars, according to “The Changing Face of Advertising in the Digital Age” from Parks Associates.
Roughly 21% of Internet users consider Internet advertising to be the most effective ad format. It has gone beyond traditional media, such as newspapers, magazines and radio.
Behavioral targeting with a variety of sounds makes the channel attractive. “Because the Internet is an interactive platform and offers rich consumer usage data, advertisers can improve their ad target ability and achieve better results,” said Parks Associates research analyst Harry Wang.
Due to audience and media fragmentation(分裂), large companies and established brands will move dollars from TV and other formats to the web. Anheuser-Busch, Procter & Gamble, Verizon, and Wachovia have already moved portions of their budgets to online advertising.
“The Internet has changed the standard for the entire world, and traditional media have to respond by making their media platforms more interactive and results-oriented,” said Wang.
The report was compiled (编写) from the findings of an Internet-based survey of 2084 US consumers in households with Internet access. The group includes 270 teenagers aged 13 to 17. The report contains data from Parks Associates’ consumer study “Digital Entertainment: Changing Consumer Habits”.

Even with hit shows such as “Desperate Housewives” and “Grey’s Anatomy”, ABC is tightening its belt as it weathers the U.S. economic downturn and tries to remain relevant in an industry challenged by digital entertainment.
“We are in one of the worst economies in 70 years. We are looking at everything we can possibly do to be more efficient and more effective,”ABC Entertainment president Steve McPherson told reporters on Friday.
“We have to look at everything across the board from cost cutting to (using) other platforms for smart ways to broker (协调) our efforts. It is an ongoing process. It is not a one time thing.”
McPherson, attending the networks’ semi ̄annual presentation to critics, said last year’s fivemonth strike by Hollywood screenwriters had “really hurt everybody” in the traditional television industry, and he acknowledged the networks had lost viewers to other forms of entertainment.
“The world has changed under these businesses and we need to be incredibly diligent and confident in what we do, otherwise we will be left by the wayside.” he said. “Tomorrow is here, now, and we really need to figure it out now and move forward.”
ABC, a unit of Walt Disney Co, has lost about 9.7 percent of its prime time audience in the 2008 ̄9 season compared with the same stage last year.
With the exception of current ratings leader CBS, the other two major U.S. networks Fox and NBC have also lost similar percentages since the 2008 ̄9 season started last September.
McPherson said he hoped ABC would continue to “take chances” on shows such as “Lost” and “Dancing with the Stars” that were seen as daring when they were shown for the first time. But recent new entries, such as “Pushing Daisies,”“Eli Stone” and “Dirty Sexy Money,” failed to resonate with viewers and were canceled.
Despite the growing trend of watching television on iPods, on the Internet and on mobile phones, McPherson said ABC’s main focus remained on broadcast.
“We are still a broadcast network and that is where our profits come from. The other platforms are important. But people ask if we would do a show that would be successful on the Internet as opposed to on broadcast and those are always secondary thoughts,” he added.
72. The main idea of the passage is about ________.
A. the strike of Hollywood screenwriters
B. the decline of ABC’s prime time audience
C. ABC’s main focus on broadcast
D. ABC’s feeling economic, digital pressure
73. The 3rd paragraph suggests to us that________.
A. the economic situation is so serious that it will last long
B. cutting cost is the best way to recover from economic downturn
C. using other smart way can develop the ongoing process
D. sparing no effort can complete the ongoing process
74. We can infer that the last economic great depression happened________.
A. in 1970 B. in 1970s
C. in 1939 D. in the 2008 ̄9 season

Depression is the leading cause of suicide, which in turn is the third ̄leading cause of death for 15 ̄to 24 ̄year ̄olds in the United States.
