German expressionist writers are all extremely keen on social issues and have a strong sense of correcting shortcomings. They oppose “art for art”, promote the social function of art as life, and advocate that artists should act as the spokesman and protector of the insulted and damaged people in order to change and improve the world. Although it is not yet clear what the world should become, this tendency has brought a new quality to German literature and has had a widespread and lasting impact on later generations of writers and artists. From the perspective of social critical tendency, this article summarizes the important characteristics of German expressionist literature.
