A new cooling system will be implemented at the Loviisa plant in Finland to ensure that nuclear power plants remain safe when cooling seawater is unavailable. Nuclear power operator Fortum claims that a unit of a new, independent air-cooling system will be used at two units at Lo Waiisa nuclear power plant with a capacity of 448 megawatts. Each unit is equipped with two cooling towers. One to remove decay heat from the reactor and one to cool the spent fuel cells and other critical nuclear safety equipment. The towers are located in a square factory about 10 meters high, with the cooling tower used to remove the decay heat from both units to be built in the same plant.
