Viral inclusion bodies (IBs) are aggregates of viral proteins in the cytoplasm or nucleus, many of which are capable of forming viral inclusions. Earlier studies suggested that viral inclusion bodies are only important starting points for virus replication and assembly. However, recent studies have found that virus inclusion bodies formed by some viruses play a role in the antiviral immune response of host cells. This article reviews the role of viral inclusion bodies in virus-infected cells.
