Why Measuring the Contribution of the Ocean to the National Economy The desire to measure the marine economy comes from its impact on the overall economy. Coastal tourism and maritime transport are the largest industries in the marine economy. Their development relies on a large number of suppliers and users, and their economic development is entirely from the sea. The scale, characteristics and growth trends of these industries provide an actual basis for the government to track changes in the economy involving the sea-related economy and the economic activities that have an input-output relationship with the sea-related economy. Furthermore, the government is deeply involved in the control and management of marine fisheries, the offshore oil and gas industry, as well as marine transport, shipbuilding and other marine construction activities.
