According to the FAO, the world shrimp has produced about 1.7 million tonnes of fish per year since 1977 and is expected to have to add another 200 000 tonnes by 1990, mainly to be met through farmed stocks. Asia and Latin America are the world’s major shrimp areas. In Asia, brackish water shrimp farming has become a large and rapidly growing industry. In 1984, shrimp production in Asia was 108,000 tons (about 6% of the world’s shrimp production), mostly for export, with 70% of production coming from Southeast Asia. It is predicted that in shrimp production in Asia in 1990 will reach 238,000 tons, an increase of 1.2 times the current output. In 1990, the production of shrimp farming in Indonesia still ranks first in Asia, and Taiwan Province of China will keep pace. Thailand, China, the Philippines and Bangladesh all will have substantial growth.
