International trade and foreign direct investment (FDI) are the two basic forms of division of labor in the international economy. Traditional trade theory completely denies the existence of international factor flows, so different analytical frameworks are formed between international trade theory and foreign direct investment theory. However, international economic practice shows that international trade and factor flows (capital flows) can occur universally among countries. At present, international trade and foreign direct investment show an integrated trend. The research thinks that the international factor flow is the most general form of the international division of labor. The commodity trade is the transnational flow of the “factor set” and the special form of the element flow. Finally, the relationship between trade and investment into a preliminary discussion.
