Japan introduced the first batch of apple varieties from the United States in 1871. There were 71 varieties of red dragon, Japanese brocade, red jade and Guoguang. Since then, Marshal, Golden Delicious, Asahi, Red Gold and Jonathan have been introduced into Japan. Apple breeding in Japan is mainly conducted in the northern part of Honshu, where two fruit tree breeding sites are involved in apple breeding. One is a central agency and the other is a county. Morioka fruit tree test site is Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Fisheries leadership, the required funds provided by the Japan Science City. Apple hybrid breeding began in 1939, has bred Fuji, Akane and so on. Among them, Fuji has accounted for 44% of the total area of Japan’s apple. New Zealand recently co-operated with New Zealand to exchange pollen and seeds and has bred several varieties that will be announced shortly.
