In the 19th century, European literature became a powerful means of promoting national identity and loyalty. The literary history as a discipline was established, its purpose is to be conducive to the construction of a certain national identity. However, Europe suffered a series of catastrophic nationalist consequences; literary studies were carefully trying to reaffirm its mandate in building a nation-state. This article concludes with a discussion of several international, multi-lingual editorial journals. These magazines to some extent, suggesting the existence of anti-traditional factors in literary studies. This anti-tradition will lay the foundation for a non-nationalist approach in an era of globalization.
