The flotation characteristics of nickel ore in Western Australia are evaluated by the flotation rate tests at each particle size, and the rate constants are obtained. Its purpose is to determine the effect of surface interaction on the flotation of nickel sulphide, pentlandite and magnesia-bearing minerals (mainly serpentine). The flotation test uses a collector (pentyl xanthate), with or without other standard pharmaceutical agents, and the other agents used in this test are carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) and soda ash. ° The addition of soda ash and CMC has shown to increase the flotation rate and recovery of pentlandite and it has been found that the addition of soda ash is necessary to improve the flotation index and the nickel recovery is rather low if soda ash is not added. Experiments have shown that the carbonate ions in soda ash increase the degree of particle dispersion in the slurry while the CMC helps to remove the sludge particles attached to the surface of the pentopyrite. Flotation mechanisms are suggested in the literature in this area to explain the observed flotation behavior of magnesium silicate-bearing gangue minerals.
