Backing up the evolution of Leonardo, it was originally derived from the idea of its founder, Frank J Mariner, who had 46 years of experience in the publishing world. The need to create a professional journal for artists led to the birth of Leonardo in 1968. Since then, Leonardo and Leonardo / ISAST have served as media for open communication between artists and others interested in science, new technology and contemporary art. This journal advocates and documents the first computer-based artists of the 1960s, the first artists to use holography and space technology in the 1970s, the first artists to use interactive media in the 1980s, The first artists to use the Internet and biotechnology and the first artists to use nanotechnology, synthetic biology, complex science, ecology and environmental science recently. At the same time, this journal serves as an important platform for the global movement in the arts and sciences and the arts and technologies. Since 1982, the founder’s eldest son, Roger F. Malina, has been the executive editor of Leonardo.
