From November 15 to November 16, 1991, “International Symposium on Life of Chinese Characters in Chinese Character Culture Circle” was held in Seoul Lotte Hotel. South Korea, China (mainland China and Taiwan), and Japanese scholars attended the meeting. Attendees said that Chinese characters are not backward words. It is impossible to replace Chinese characters with Latinized pinyin texts. With the rapid economic development in the Pacific Ocean, the popularization of computers and scientific progress, Chinese characters have shown tremendous power. In all countries where Chinese characters are used, it is not appropriate to simplify the Chinese characters in a fickle manner in all regions, resulting in difficulties in international exchange of Chinese characters. Some South Korean scholars have painfully pointed out: The abolition of Chinese characters is detrimental to their succession of national cultural traditions and cultural quality improvement. Advancing members of the International Symposium, South Korea and China Friendship Association Zheng Bingxue delivered a keynote speech.
