弁言黄牧甫是近代印坛开宗立派的人物,他自幼受家庭熏陶学习诗礼之余捉刀篆刻,后遍学明清诸名家而不为门户所拘,在篆刻上体悟并积蓄着艺术养分。他的伎艺、好学、品性、学识为其人生带来了机遇,他开始与更多的名流、知识分子接触,最终以一介布衣游于卿相间,与著名金石学家为伍投入到清末的金石学大潮中。他以渊博的修养上追三代金吉金、秦汉古迹化为己用,成一代篆刻宗师,对后世印人影响巨大而成“黟山派”。
