After reading the chapter “Approximate Calculations” in the secondary professional school algebra (first edition in Shanghai, August 1956), I think it is much better than Carnegie’s translation—the trial is written in the same way as the chapter; the narrative is concise. The basic concept has been given a prominent account and the exercises have been more substantial. Therefore, the effect of using this textbook in teaching will be even greater. However, in this chapter, I think there are still some questions that are worth discussing and writing about my understanding. In the following, please correct me. 1. The method of 18 approximations is referred to as “rounding off method” and also “eliminate method”. I think that “tailing method” should be introduced at the same time because the textbook itself is talking about absolute error and excess.
