作为一移民国家,美国本可照搬欧洲母国的发展轨道,但可贵之处在于,其选择了“在移植中反思,在反思中创新”的本土道路。1917年《史密斯-休斯法案》成为美国中等职业教育走出欧洲框架的起点。其间,“普杜之辩”与综合中学“单轨”制所彰显的本土自觉意识为世界各国尤其是中国建构具有自身特征的职业教育模式提供了启示;有关自由教育与职业教育、职业主义与民主主义、雇主阶层与雇员阶层、效率与民主等多维冲突的讨论则为其它国家教育制度的创设提供了典范。
