Lung cancer data from the National Institute of Cancer Surveillance, Epidemiology and Results Analysis found that the incidence of lung cancer in white men increased by 10% by the 1970s. In the early 1980s, the growth rate decreased and then kept at a low level. The incidence of lung cancer was reduced by 4% from 1982 to 1983. It is estimated that more than 7,000 lung cancer cases were reduced in 1983 alone. The incidence and mortality of lung cancer have declined in 45-year-old men since 1973, and morbidity and mortality among men over 54 have remained constant since 1978. The age-adjusted incidence of black men is nearly 50% higher than whites, but the incidence of morbidity and mortality tends to decrease the same.
