With the invention of the high-speed engine and the automobile in the 1880s, the two independent businessmen, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, both laid the foundation for the development of road transportation mechanization. Benz&Cie Company was founded by Benz in October, 1883, and Daimler-Motoren-Gesellschaft (DMG for short) was established in November, 1890. And the coming of the new century brings the products of DMG a new name, "Mercedes". Mercedes is a Spanish female name, meaning "elegant". It is also the name of Austrian businessman Emil Jellinek's daughter, who was born in 1889. In December 22, 1900, the first new racing car with the new engine of 35 horsepower was delivered to Jellinek by the DMG Company. The car which was first named as "Mercedes" had a wide range of innovative features, and is considered the first modern car at present. In June 23, 1902, "Mercedes" was presented as a trademark name and officially registered on September 26 that year. As of June, 1903, Emil Jellinek changed his name into Jellinek-Mercedes, and he also commented, "This is probably a precedent of a father snatching his daughter's name."
