Coubertin, who advocates the revitalization of the Olympic spirit, emphasizes that contestants must be amateurs and not receive any form of compensation for the competition. It is easily identifiable in the upper-class sports world. However, it is not easy to distinguish whether or not an athlete is a pro. Jim Thorpe of the United States won the decathlon and pentathlon gold medal at the 1912 Olympic Games. However, when the U.S. Amateur Athletics Federation investigated, he found that while he was in college, he was a member of the University Football League and also played for the American baseball Small league team played. Thorpe was deprived of his status as amateur and lost two gold medals.
