Renaissance British poets think gardens have two kinds of functions: one is to provide senses happiness, the other is to provide spiritual pleasure; the latter reflects the true value of the garden, helping people to obtain innermost supreme joy through contemplation. The various symbols in the poet’s contemplation garden, the expression of time and the theme of change; the exploration of the knowledge contained in the “encyclopedic” garden; and the understanding of the cosmic order and harmony reflected in the formal garden. In addition, they also regard the natural garden as a tool of inner life, which is like a mirror of nature, from which they can glimpse the book of miniature creation. This meditative garden offers a way to transcend one’s self so that the soul soars above nature.
