Recognizing the characteristic skin lesions associated with disseminated candidiasis makes it possible to diagnose and treat this often lethal fungal infection, which can often not be diagnosed due to the absence of specific signs and symptoms. Because most of this infection is caused by the prevalence of Candida species, explaining positive culture results is difficult unless pathogenic bacteria are cultured from the blood, and Bodey reports that blood cultures are positive and account for only the necropsy confirmed by autopsy 25% of patients with disseminated candidiasis. Although extensive organ involvement is characteristic of disseminated candidiasis, few are reported for skin lesions. This article describes the skin findings that can be used to infer the clinical diagnosis of disseminated candidiasis.
