At 57, the second novel, The Shipping News (1993), won four literary awards including the American National Book Award and the Pulitzer Prize, winning overnight fame. Boat News is set in Newfoundland, Canada, where the author often resides. This is a semi-enclosed place away from the mainstream society and its clumsy folkways. Local residents, mostly British descendants, still use dialects that were popular in England and Ireland hundreds of years ago.
