元朝时的中国是个横跨欧亚的大帝国，商业极度繁荣，国内外贸易很发达。出现了一批商业中心和贸易港口。元朝流通的货币除白银外，几乎全是纸币。元朝的纸币流通经过了三个时期：元世祖的中统钞时期，至元钞时期；元顺帝的至正钞时期。元朝在纸币流通行使中，制定了一套较完善的纸币管理制度。初期，采取了两大重要措施。
During the Yuan Dynasty, China was a great empire across Europe and Asia. Its commerce was extremely prosperous and trade at home and abroad was well developed. A number of commercial centers and trade ports emerged. The currency circulating in the Yuan Dynasty was almost exclusively banknotes except silver. The circulation of notes in the Yuan Dynasty went through three periods: the period of the Central Banknote of the Yuan Dynasty in the period of the Central Banknote and the period of the Yuan Dynasty Notes; Yuan Dynasty circulation in the notes, developed a set of more perfect banknotes management system. Initially, two major steps were taken.
