Yasunari Kawabata is Japan’s first and second Asian writer to win the Nobel Prize for Literature. Throughout Kawabata’s literature, most of his favorite subjects are sadness, loneliness and death, which are not only affected by the traditional Japanese sorrow but also related to his personal traumatic experience. This article combines trauma theory to explore the impact of personal trauma on Kawabata’s own and Kawabata’s literature. These personal traumas mainly include childhood orphans, endless lingering death and lovelorn experiences.
