The incidence of gastric cancer in the upper 1/3 gastric cancer is higher than that in other sites. The prognosis of these patients is poor, and the 5-year survival rate after resection is 4 to 32%. This article describes the clinicopathological features and prognostic factors of the upper 1/3 gastric cancer and compares it with other sites of gastric cancer. From 1965 to 1985, gastrectomy was performed on 1,468 primary gastric cancers, of which 356 (24.3%) had upper 1/3 gastric cancer. If the 1/2 or more of the mass is located on the upper 1/3 of the stomach, it is regarded as the upper 1/3 of the stomach. Pathological diagnosis and classification are based on the surgical and pathological criteria of the Japanese Gastric Society. The author of 356 patients with upper 1/3 gastric cancer and 1,112 patients with other departments
