This article is a paper presented at the Magnetic Recording Technology Symposium held in London on December 15, 1959. This article discusses some of the problems with fast start-stop digital tape drives. A prototype with a bandwidth of 1/2 inch, a speed of 100 inches / second and a start-stop time of three milliseconds (up to 90% of the maximum) is described.
