In 1993, at the Hanover Industrial Fair, a company introduced the world’s first mercury-free sodium-xenon lamp with a power of about 80W. The lamp supplies the lamp pulse current through a dedicated electronic ballast. This article reviews in particular the operating characteristics of HPS lamps under pulsed conditions.
