  Scarecrow Guards Jail Birds

A judge on an inspection visit to a Brazilian jail discovered a straw scarecrow dressed in police uniform on the watchtower “guarding” some 735 jail birds, police said. The judge removed the scarecrow, which had apparently been manning the watchtower for days, and took it to the court as evidence. Police opened an investigation. “It is considered a grave breach of security rules,” a police spokesman said, adding that a prison guard or a police officer should have been on the tower at all times. The Taubate Provisional Detention Center for prisoners awaiting tri-al near Brazil’s biggest city of Sao Paulo was opened at the end of 2001 and has already had one publicized escape via an underground tunnel. Brazil’s prison system is plagued with break-outs and violent riots due to extreme overcrowding, lack of funds and poor pay for prison officers.

Ig Nobel Award Encourages Brave Innovators

Harvard University prepares to announce the 2004 Ig Nobel Award win-ners — handed out since 1991 for research that “cannot or should not be reproduced”.
Last year’s winners included the scientists who performed “An Analysis of the Forces Re-quired to Drag Sheep over Various Surfaces” and the authors of the report “Politicians’ Uniquely Simple Personalities”.
The ceremony, which will be held this Thursday, has become an Ivy League tradition, with Nobel Prize winners on hand to salute the winners. And even though the Ig Nobel is not exactly a prestigious award, winners travel from all over the world to collect their trophies.
“We’re not insult-ed,”said Jonathan Wyatt,a Scottish researcher at the University of Glasgow who was honored with two other colleagues a few years ago for a report titled The Collapse of Toi-lets in Glasgow.
“Between us, we’ve published more than 70 research papers,” he said. “This is the only one that’s given us any publicity at all.” If noth-ing else, the Ig Nobels demonstrates a form of courage, and you need courage if you intend to be an innovator.

  Misunderstanding

After taking a course in organic gardening, I couldn’t wait to start planting. My husband took our three chil-dren on a weekend canoe trip so I could have two uninter-rupted days.
The first day I spent preparing the soil, shaping it into four large raised beds. As I stood resting on my hoe, admiring my work, I noticed a neighbour eyeing me curiously.
   “I’m doing my plant-ing,” I explained.
“Oh,” he said with re-lief. “I thought you’d just buried your family.”
