The purpose of this study was to investigate the vascular elasticity of dissecting aneurysms using ultrasound techniques. The study included 26 patients with dissecting aneurysm, 22 age- and sex-matched hypertensive controls, and 26 normal controls. Measurements included systolic and diastolic vessel diameters of the ascending aorta 3 cm above the aortic valve and brachial artery blood pressure of the right upper limb in the supine position in the supine position; aortic dilatation was obtained using the simplified Young’s formula. The results showed that distensibility of the ascending aorta in dissecting aneurysms was significantly lower than that in the hypertension group and the normal control group (P < 0.01). The expansibility was linearly related to the diameter of the ascending aorta with a correlation coefficient of -0.61. This study reveals for the first time the abnormalities of blood vessels in dissecting aneurysms from the perspective of vascular elasticity.
