1968至1998年30年间,围绕着《毛主席去安源》这幅名画,文化艺术界先后发生了一系列重大事件。有关这幅油画的来龙去脉、兴衰沉浮及最后归属,多年来争议颇多、风波叠出,为这幅“世纪名画”蒙上一层神秘色彩。 1967年10月,北京、江西的红卫兵组织在中国革命博物馆联合举办《毛泽东思想的光辉照亮了安源工人运动》展览,由中央工艺美术学院学生集体创作(刘春华执笔)的大幅油画《毛主席去安源》首次与观众见面。由于这幅绘画产生于特殊年代,并具有特殊的政治内涵,所以受到江青、陈伯达一伙的赏识。各大报刊竞相刊登,撰文评论,给予了极高的评价。企图借助这幅油画,歪曲历史,抹煞刘少奇等人领导安源路矿工人大罢工的历史功绩。 1968年7月9日,《人民日报》发表长篇通讯《无产阶级文化大革命开出灿烂的艺术之花——记大幅油画“毛主席去安源”的诞生》,文章登出后,报刊纷纷转载,各种宣传媒体竞相借题发挥,用华而不实的语言,极尽拔高之能事,将这幅油画描绘成东方的“蒙娜丽莎”,使其得到的赞誉几乎无以复加。与此同时,
