The p-phenylenediamine color developing agent (PPD_s) was sequentially converted into semidiquinone radical (SQDI_s) and quinonediimine (QDI_s) by two-step electron transfer. Semi-quinone free radicals have strong absorption of the characteristic light in the visible range (460-550 nm), and the progress of the reaction can be monitored by monitoring the change of the absorbance of the semi-quinone.
