In 1990, Taiyo Yuden introduced a recordable disc using cyanine dye technology and started a revolution in consumer digital storage. Followed by phthalocyanine dye technology quickly accepted by the majority of manufacturers and consumers. Azo dyes can record light and become the third common organic dye. The CD-R started to slow down due to the high price of discs and drives and the hassle of burning. One-speed recording meant that it took 74 minutes to burn a 650 megabyte of data or music. Over the years, as CD-R prices have fallen, and the demand for large-capacity, convenient and fast recording has led to the astronomical expansion of compact disc CD-Rs. Based on the current annual output of 8 billion pieces, it is expected to increase by 12% annually. This trend is expected to be replaced by DVD-R instead of CD-R.
